Mealtimes are not usually a social occasion for the Balinese. Meals are eaten alone,quietly and quickly.
It is considered to be bad manners to speak to a Balinese while eating and food is eaten with the right hand only.

Rice is an important and staple part of each meal.
Mie Goreng and Nasi Goreng are common as breakfast meals.
Daily meals generally consist of rice, one or two vegetable dishes and possibly meat or fish.

The food is cooked early in the morning and eaten at various times during the day. In between meal times, snacks are eaten.


Balinese food is usually peppery and served with spices (garlic, fish paste, and peppers). Coconut is used in many dishes (sauces and curries) and chilies are used for sambal and kecap (soybean sauce). Sambal is used to flavour raw and cooked vegetables, chicken and fish.

Some Balinese specialty dishes include:

Chopped and shredded papaya, jackfruit, green beans &coconut, served with other dishes.Lawar may also be made with fresh raw blood and be red in colour.

Bebek Betutu
Seasoned duck, stuffed with spices and vegetables and cooked in a banana leaves.

Babi Guling
Usually a ceremonial meal but also available from markets and street stalls. Babi Guling is a whole pig stuffed mainly with chilies, onions, garlic, peppers, turmeric and ginger.

Other popular foods in Bali are the Indonesian Nasi Goreng (spicy rice), Sate (spiced and skewered meat on a stick),Nasi Campur (steamed rice with vegetables, meat, pickles and crackers) and Mie Goreng (fried noodles with meat, seafood. eggs. spices, shrimp paste and chilies)

Warungs are small eating stalls set up on the side of the road. They are meeting places for the men where stories are swapped, the paper read and a meal is eaten. Warung fare can include coffee, tea, cake biscuits or a complete meal.

Kaki Lima's or Pushcarts.
These carts are usually pushed along the vendor and are basically a self-contained mobile restaurant. Food is cooked while you wait and then eaten on the kerb. The vendors identify what they are selling as they push the carts along, whether it be noodle soup, mie goreng or sate.

There are many restaurants serving a variety of cuisine in Bali such as Japanese,Chinese,European,Indian and Italian.
Standards range from the simple to 5 star.
