It is advisable to have notes in smaller denominations for services such as taxi fare, public toilets and the Markets.
These places or people will usually not have (or claim not to have) change, if given a larger bill.
There is generally not a problem using larger notes eg 50000, 100000 rp in restaurants or shopping centres.

Many of the smaller notes have been in circulation for quite some time (100 & 500). These are quite often tattered, filthy and almost unrecognizable.
Banks will not accept notes that are in this condition. Try not to accept these as change.
Vendors as well as the banks sometimes will not accept them.

Tipping is not a common practice in Bali and not encouraged. Tipping usually occurs if the service provided has been of a high standard ,eg porters and drivers.

Many restaurants add a 10-15% service tax on the bill.
It is common practice for patrons to leave a bit extra for restaurant staff by rounding up the bill and not collecting the change. These extras are put in a container and shared between all staff at the end of the day.
How much extra given ,is up to the patron and is usually indicative of how good or friendly the service was.


BANKS
Banking hours are from 8am to 12 noon Monday to Friday and 8am to 11 am on Saturday.
Appropriate dress should be worn if visiting a bank. (Bathers sarongs and singlets are not acceptable dress.)


MONEY CHANGERS
Some Tips for Changing Money at Moneychangers:

+ Use new crisp 100-dollar bills (eg if using Australian Currency)
+ Lesser denominations than 100 usually attract a lesser exchange rate.
+ Look for places that do not charge commission.
+ If the rate is higher than everywhere else they will probably try to cheat you in the transaction.
+ Avoid changing money where the counter is high or they offer smaller denominations (eg 20000rp or 10000 rp)
+ Always count the money given more than once.
+ Do not let the moneychanger handle the money again after you have counted it.
+ Have a friend double-check the amount.
+ Use your own calculator as theirs have often been rigged to show incorrect calculations.
+ Do not hand over your own currency until you are satisfied you have the correct amount.
+ Preferably use Authorized moneychangers (usually have a sign displayed ,or are located at Kodak Shops and provide you with a receipt)
+ If you find you have been duped, contact the Tourist Police and/or return to the moneychanger and demand the correct amount.
